VA Lawyers East Chicago

Although the VA provides qualifying veterans with benefits following service in the military, applying for, or appealing a denial of these benefits, can be a complicated process.

Having an experienced attorney on your side can make all the difference to the success of your own claim, so if you are a veteran and believe that you could qualify for benefits, it is critical to contact experienced VA lawyers East Chicago who can ensure that your claim is filed properly.

VA Disability Benefits

Veterans who suffer from certain medical conditions or injuries that were sustained during their military service are eligible for tax-free monthly compensation. When applying for this benefit, veterans should have certain documentation at their disposal, including their:

  • Discharge or separation papers;
  • Service treatment records;
  • Supporting statements; and
  • Medical records and hospital reports from private medical providers.

Obtaining disability benefits can be time-consuming, so many veterans choose to utilize the Decision Ready Claims (DRC) program, which expedites the disability compensation claim process for eligible veterans. The DRC program only accepts specific types of claims, such as:

  • Claims in which a veteran is requesting an increase to an already existing payment;
  • Claims involving injuries that have direct or presumptive service connections;
  • Claims involving medical conditions with a secondary service connection;
  • Claims filed by surviving spouses for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation; and
  • Pre-discharge claims filed by transitioning service members within 90 days of discharge.

Veterans who qualify for inclusion in this program could receive a decision within one month of the submission of their application.

VA Healthcare Benefits

In addition to providing disability benefits to eligible veterans, the VA also grants enrolled veterans access to healthcare, which includes:

  • A comprehensive medical benefits package that includes preventive, specialty, and primary care, in addition to home health care and prescriptions;
  • No-cost counseling, outreach, and referral services for veterans who served in combat zones and their families; and
  • Primary care for women, including breast and cervical cancer screenings, maternity care coverage, and prenatal care.

Veterans who satisfy the VA’s military service requirements can request access to VA healthcare but must include specific documentation with their applications, including:

  • Their discharge papers;
  • Information about any health insurance coverage provided by a partner; and
  • Wage and financial information.

VA Education and Training

The VA also helps veterans cover the cost of furthering their education and skills by providing funds for:

  • Tuition;
  • Housing;
  • Training; and
  • Education-related expenses.

These benefits can be used toward obtaining traditional degrees, as well as on-the-job training, non-college degrees, licensing and certification, fees to cover tests, and apprenticeship costs. The VA also provides assistance to veterans who are attempting to transition from their military service to civilian employment, while disabled veterans could also qualify for one-on-one support, training, and counseling. Those who believe they qualify for these benefits will need to complete the application process and submit supporting documentation, including copies of their discharge papers. In some cases, applicants may also need to provide proof of an enlistment incentive or College Fund, although this is not required for those applying under the GI Bill.
