Park Ridge VA Disability Lawyer

Veterans who sustain or contract certain medical conditions during their service in the military could be eligible for a variety of disability benefits, including monthly compensation payments, vocational rehabilitation, and nursing home assistance.

Unfortunately, filing a claim for these benefits can be difficult, so if you believe that you might qualify for disability benefits, it is important to speak with an experienced Park Ridge VA disability lawyer who can ensure that your claim is filed properly and on time.

Disability Compensation

Disability compensation is a tax-free monthly payment that is made to veterans suffering from a disease or injury that was incurred or aggravated during military service. Veterans could qualify for disability compensation for a physical condition, such as a chronic illness or injury, as well as a mental health condition like PTSD. In fact, some illnesses and injuries are automatically presumed to satisfy the definition of a disability for compensation purposes, including chronic illnesses that appear within a year of discharge, illnesses caused by coming into contact with toxic chemicals, and illness contracted during the time spent as a prisoner of war.

Vocational Rehabilitation

Veterans who have been diagnosed with disabilities that were caused or worsened by their active duty service and whose ability to work has been limited as a result could be eligible for employment support services, but only if they:

  • Were not dishonorably discharged; and
  • Have a service-related disability rating of at least 10%.

Although the types of services that are available to disabled veterans depend on a person’s specific needs and goals, potential services could include:

    • An evaluation to determine a veteran’s skills, interests, and abilities for employment purposes;
    • Job training, resume development, and work-readiness support;
    • Assistance obtaining workplace accommodations;
    • Case management services, medical referrals, and counseling;
    • On-the-job training and apprenticeships;
    • Independent living services; and
    • Post-secondary training at a college, vocational, business, or technical school.
