VA Healthcare

Many veterans qualify for VA healthcare coverage, which includes access to a number of different services, such as:

  • Inpatient and outpatient care;
  • Health education;
  • Preventive care, including cancer screenings;
  • Physical exams and immunizations;
  • Medical treatment, including surgery and access to prescription medications;
  • Women’s healthcare;
  • Emergency care for serious medical conditions;
  • Mental health services and counseling;
  • Counseling on genetic diseases;
  • Specialized care, including transplants and access to intensive care services; and
  • Assisted living, long-term care, and home healthcare services.

In order to qualify for VA healthcare benefits, a veteran need only have served in an active-duty capacity and been discharged under non-dishonorable conditions. To learn more about applying for VA medical benefits, please contact our legal team today.

Aid and Attendance Benefits

In addition to healthcare benefits, veterans who require regular nursing care may also be eligible for aid and attendance benefits in the form of a monthly payment if they:

  • Need the help of another person in fulfilling daily activities and personal functions, such as dressing and bathing;
  • Suffer from a disability that requires bed rest when not receiving treatment;
  • Live in a nursing home because of a physical or mental disability; or
  • Are blind or have a visual acuity of 5/200 or less in both eyes.

Although aid and attendance benefits are primarily used to pay for the cost of nursing home expenses, they can also be used to cover a portion of in-home nursing services.

Disability Benefits

Veterans who suffer from disabilities that were caused by or worsened during their active military service could qualify for disability compensation, which includes financial support and healthcare benefits. In addition to serving in active duty, inactive duty training, or active duty for training capacity and receiving a disability rating for a service-connected medical condition, veterans who are seeking disability compensation must also be able to prove that they:

  • Became sick or were injured while serving in the military; or
  • Suffered from an injury or illness prior to joining the military and serving made it worse; or
  • Have a disability-related to their service, although it did not appear until after retirement or discharge.

A wide range of conditions are covered by these benefits, including:

  • Chronic back pain resulting from a back disability or injury;
  • Breathing problems caused by lung disease;
  • Severe hearing loss;
  • Loss of range of motion;
  • Ulcers;
  • Certain cancers;
  • Traumatic brain injury;
  • PTSD; and
  • Depression.
